Feeling courageous! Attempting Angel Food Cake

I love angel food cake and so do my girls, however I’ve always felt you can’t make it for what it costs at the grocery store but I was feeling spunky today.

I pulled out my old stand by, The Joy of Cooking and used their angel cake recipe:

Recipe:

  • 1 cup sifted flour
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cups egg whites
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp cream of tarter
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 3/4 cup sugar

Directions:

  1. Sift together the flour, sugar and salt, set aside.
  2. In large mixing bowl, whisk on medium speed the egg whites, water, lemon juice, cream of tarter and vanilla until it becomes white and foamy.  About 5 times the amount.
  3. Slowly add 1 tbsp of sugar until 3/4 cup is incorporated.  The eggs should be white and fluffy but not stiff.  Do not over beat.
  4. Slowly fold in flour mixture until incorporated.
  5. Add to pan, bake at 350 for 40 minutes
  6. Cool completely and remove from pan.  Dust with powder sugar and cocoa.

I tried to use a really cool flower pan but because it stuck to the pan, the flowers are hard to see.  Although it was very tasty indeed!

Thanks for looking!
