11-11-11 – Lest We Forget

IMGP8340

Today is a big deal. I mean November 11th, not that it’s Friday.  This is the first one I’ve spent not in Canada so it now has an added meaning.

Happy Remembrance Day!

and now

Happy Veterans Day!

Every year we would go down to the War Memorial in downtown Ottawa (Canada’s capital city) with thousands of others and pay our respects.

So what’s the diff?  Well, Remembrance day celebrates those who died in the line of duty since World War I.  Veterans day celebrates those who fought in a wars, but above all, both mark the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice to end World War I.

This year is kind of a big deal because it lands on the 11th day or the 11th month of the 2011th year, making it 11-11-11 with a moment of silence at 1100 hours or 11am.

So how does one celebrate?  Well as Rob is ex-military (he was in the Reserves throughout university) and I love to bake…you celebrate with cookies!

I took some sugar cookies and made poppies because in Canada it’s the most recognized symbol for Remembrance day.

So today, take a moment and celebrate those who serve to protect everything we love!

I know I will :)

  2. Love these cookies! I remember my grandma standing outside of our tiny local grocery store selling poppy flowers (fake plastic flowers) to raise money for veterans. They even had a competition to raise money when I was little and I was crowned Poppy Queen. hehe! Good memories! :)
