My Mother’s Day!

IMGP9829

I am like a flower
That’s raised with love by you
You help me grow up big and strong
Mom, thanks for all you do!
(from a card made by Rowan)

So what did you do for Mother’s Day?  I got to sleep in, my girls made me breakfast and I got to spend the afternoon at Swank Cake Design.

Best. Day. Ever!

After I did the Jacobean cake class in January, I knew I wanted to go back and take another.  So when there next dates for classes were release I decided on the fancy gum paste shoe and what was even better was that it fell on Mother’s Day. Oh yeah!

My husband initially rolled his eyes but then realized he didn’t have to think about what to get me from the girls, I’d done all the work.  Genius :)

Yesterday I set off after my wonderful morning with my family to Swank’s new digs in Cary, NC.  I loved it because it’s 10 minutes from home plus it’s bigger than the old spot.

Wayne and Chuck were their awesome selves.  Everyone felt so welcome and the best thing is that no question is left unanswered.  Their relaxing manners and teaching style make the class so much fun.  What’s even better, you get to leave with your work of art plus all the forming tools and templates required to make this shoe at home.  So worth it’s weight in gold.

The next class I want to take is for this cake!  Sadly I have to wait until 2013, which bites, but I’ll be there when it’s offered.  Isn’t it awesome!

And now a comparison.

My day was topped off with a lovely dinner made by Rob and it was shared with my friend Anna (who’s hubby was out of town).

So as you can tell, I had the most awesome Mother’s Day.  Here’s hoping next years will be as good!

And thanks again Wayne and Chuck, you guys rock!

Thanks for looking!

Another Day at Swank!

upclosejacobean

Yesterday I spent another super fun day at Swank Cake Design in Raleigh.  This time I learned about Jacobean applique.

I love Swank classes!  Chuck and Wayne are so relaxed and the atmosphere is so welcoming, once you get past the fancy schmancy rest of the house.  They share a building with other wedding planners and all things wedding.  If I wasn’t already married, I know where my one stop shop would be!

Anyway, what I love most of all about the class, is that they will answer any question and share any recipe. They’ll tell you whatever you want to know and I love that about them. Nothing is a secret and when someone who is that talented and is so open, I tell all my friends!

Learning how to do the applique was just the start of the class.  Best of all, I got to use something I’ve always wanted to try, the airbrush.  OMG so much fun.  Wayne offered to spray my flower for me, but hell no, I wanted to try that bad boy!  The food colour went on more things than my flower but ah well.  I also learned that I needed a few more things, like a ribbon cutter and also how to use my clay extruder properly (apparently dusting the gum paste/fondant with cornstarch/icing sugar before it goes in the tube makes it work better :))  Who knew!

The class was so great and I met some amazing ladies.  Karen from Sweet Tooth Temptations and the mother/daughter duo from Peacocks Stop Bakery.  I’m so awful with names, you can see why I only remembered one :)  Wait, thanks to Chuck (Jennifer and Bonnie)!

Anyway, if you can’t tell yet, I’m totally recommending classes from Swank Cake Design in Raleigh.  It’s an awesome way to learn new techniques and spend a Saturday afternoon.

Again, thanks to Chuck and Wayne.  I had a blast!
