Snowflake Cookies and a visit with great friends.

Snowflake Cookies and a visit with great friends.IMGP8392

After a year away from Canada, we all headed back to visit with family and friends.  If we had all the time in the world we’d visit with everyone individually but time just doesn’t allow that.  I also wanted to stop in on everyone’s favourite online support system, Paula from Vanilla Bean Baker but alas she had oodles of family and we had no time.

We also drove home and that just makes it so much longer.  It’s 16 hours from Raleigh to Ottawa, spend not quite 4 full days and then 16 hours back.  The chocolate rice krispies were a big hit from last week’s treat day.  The kids were so excellent, the only issue was the amount of tissues we went through.  Yup both had full on colds by the drive home.  Thank God for the iPad!  Dartagnan also travelled with us and he was a champion!  After all the junk food and the past month off from injury, I so need to get back to the gym :)

We got to visit with Rob’s parents in Tweed and then spend some time with our friends in Ottawa.  That’s been the hardest part of moving so far away, missing all our friends.  So we got to go out for a grown up dinner, the girls spend the evening with their other favourite person, Shally, and we spent time with good friends.  Oh and a fabulous dinner at Juniper Wine Bar in Westboro, Ottawa, Canada.  If you visit, it’s a must go!

I also got to see Breaking Dawn with some friends too.  It was awesomely cheesy, as expected!  Loved it :)

I wanted to tell everyone how much we missed them and nothing says that more than making a few cookies :)  So everyone we got to see got cookies except for one and only because I forgot them in the car.

I decided on making snowflake cookies so I could use the awesome cutter I bought when in Sonoma Valley in the summer.

Here’s how I made them:

You will need:

  • favourite sugar cookie dough.  This is mine.
  • snow flake cutter
  • white royal icing at piping consistency (I use Bake at 350’s awesome recipe)
  • light blue icing at flooding consistency
  • silver disco dust
  • piping bag with size 1 tip
  • flooding bottle

So let’s get started!

  1. Make, cut and bake your snow flakes. If you want less spreading, replace 1/2 cup butter with 1/2 cup shortening.  They hold much better.  Now I’ve never tried it b/c I love the flavour of my cookies too much.  So I’m willing to accept the spread!

  2. Outline and flood cookies in the light blue RI .  This is Lilaloa’s famous chocolate cookie that I had left over dough.  You’ll notice that there isn’t any spread as these have shortening in them.

  3. Let dry overnight
  4. Pipe details in white RI

  5. Let dry over night
  6. Brush with disco dust!  They really did shimmer!

So now we are back at home and life goes back to normal.  So in 4 weeks we can do it all again, but in the opposite direction.  We go to Florida for Christmas with my parents.

Thanks for looking!

  1. Oh...sorry to hear that both the girls have colds! You certainly had a busy few days but it sounds as if you all had a wonderful time catching up with family and friends.
Your snowflake cookies are so pretty and sooo big! I'm sure everyone was delighted to receive them.
Hopefully next time you are up this way our schedules will allow for a get-together. How fun that you are going to celebrate Christmas in Florida with your parents! The bonus about that drive is you won't have any snowstorms to have to worry about:)

  2. These are such wonderful looking cookies! I have gotten 2 snowflake cookie cutters this year just waiting to be used. I am still recovering from eating too much Thanksgiving! Wow you did have a long drive! We drove from VA to Canada in the summer, but stopped twice along the way to see more family, so 8 hours was the most in one shot, not too bad compared to your drive!

  3. I'm so glad that you posted this to Hearth and Soul. I bought a snowflake cookie cutter this weekend to make cookies for my daughter's birthday party. I had planned on doing all white, but I love the light blue glaze on yours.

  9. Sounds like you had a lovely time! It's so good catching up with family and friends. I hope your Christmas in Florida is wonderful - I still remember an awesome Christmas we spent in Florida with my late parents many years ago.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful tutorial with Let's Do Brunch. I'm not very good at icing cookies, and you've made me feel like I could actually do this! They really are beautiful, and so perfect for this time of year.
