Treat Day Wednesday–Halloween Treats!

Ok, so I’ve been a little remiss on sharing my treats over the past couple weeks but rest assured I did make them.

So here we go:

Witches Cupcakes:  Here I made simple chocolate cupcakes, covered with black chocolate icing and topped with an airbrushed sugar ice cream cone.  I also added the fondant details.  If you don’t want black lips, tongues and mouths then I’d suggest a different colour for the hair/icing.

Spookie Cookies:  Left over cookies, icing and some wet on wet techniques!  Super simple, super fun and super tasty.  The black icing is chocolate royal icing with a bit of black gel colouring.  It’ll still colour your mouth but won’t have a bitter taste because it tastes like chocolate!

My Chocolate Royal Icing: Take a cup of already made royal icing, add 2 tbsp of cocoa and mix together.  It will be quite thick.  Add 2-3 drops of black gel colouring and completely combine.  It won’t be so dark but let it sit for an hour and it’ll be jet black.  You also won’t require to add water to loosen it up as it will do that too.  This is just what I did, you may need to play with your icing to get the right consistency.

So give it a go.  It’s nice not to have aweful tasting black icing for a change.  I hope it works for you too!

The 2nd Annual Go Bo Bake Sale

If you’ve been around the cookie blog/block you’ve probably seen or heard about Bo.  Bo was, in my opinion is, one of the most courageous kids I’ve ever read about.  I never met him, but I feel like I have through all I’ve learned from my friend Jill of Jill’s Funky Cookie Studio.

I missed last year’s bake sale due to injury and general lack of being able to do anything :)  This year would be different.  I started with a fun and cute set of Halloween cookies.  I had fun with them, but kept them simple.

But I had some cookie dough leftover and wanted to make some funky ones, so I made these:

Then I shipped them off to Jill.  My job here was done.  I felt good.  Then I saw some Halloween cards at Target and new I hade to turn them into cookies.  Before I could forget them I went home and made them.  I changed them a tiny bit but mostly stayed true to the original pictures.  I pulled out the airbrush and went to town.  They turned out better than expected.  So what to do with them.  I know.  Off they went!  I then posted them and I guess I wasn’t the only one who like them because they were my most successful cookies to date.  Having over 5000 hits and shared over 50 times.  That’s huge for me, I was on cloud nine!

I’m so proud of these cookies and I’m so proud to be apart of this amazing event.

All 50 states are represented plus 8 countries.  Way to go Bo!!!  You’ve inspired the world :)

Treat Day Wednesday - Happy Halloween!

How perfect is that?  Halloween falls on treat day, so my job is done!

Abby is going as a vampire and Rowan is divided between a Jaguar Zombie or a Rapunzel Zombie, either way Zombie! I’ll post pics, I promise.

My girls are getting all the candy they can get their little hands on during trick or treating, whilst I made some fun cookies for the other kids on our street.

I love making my stick figures but this time I made them dressed up for Halloween!

Happy Halloween, I hope you all have a ghoulish night and may the candy be ever in your favour!

Now I’ll be off to CookieCon 2012 Thursday morning, so I’ll see you on the flip side of this weekend with tons and tons of cookies!

Treat Day Wednesday–Witch Fingers

IMGP1084

Ok, as we fast approach the end of October, I’m trying to make fun Halloweeny treats.  Like these Witch Fingers. No baking required, which on a day like today is perfect!  You know the day, where you were suppose to run around with your head cut off only to find out that all your best laid plans have been sidelined because your child has a tooth emergency or potential tooth emergency.

You see Abby is seven and hasn’t lost her first tooth.  She fell as school in kindergarten and smacked her tooth which eventually went black.  The dentist said not to worry, it’ll just fall out early.  No so my friends, not so.  It actually did the opposite.  It went back to white and I think decided it was going to stay forever.  Good times.

The next tooth that started to wiggle, over 3 months ago, has still stayed put and now the grown up tooth has come in behind it.  So off to the dentist this morning thinking they were going to pull the baby tooth. I mean all dentists try to get your for everything, but not so again.  Not only did he not pull the tooth he didn’t charge me for the visit and told Abby to start playing with it.  However, where I thought we’d have tears for pulling her tooth, Abby cried because she didn’t get her tooth pulled and had to go back to school.  I’m so mean!

So I wanted to make a treat day that didn’t require a whole lot of work or brain power.

The Halloween candy melts are now available in all the craft stores and so I got the black and the new Wilton neon green.  I used an ice cube tray I got last year and the Wilton Witch Finger cookie pan that a neighbour gave to me.

I think they turned out pretty cool! Using the two different colours really made them look cool, plus the air bubbles made the fingers look all scraggly!

Happy Halloween!

This is our first Halloween in the States and I’ve got to say, it’s quite different than at home.  Everyone here is so into it.  At home, people take it or leave it.  I mean we kind of decorated the house, carved pumpkins and then walked the two streets in our neighbourhood with our friends, but that was it.  It wasn’t much but the kids had fun.  This year, they’ve been talking about this day since before October started.  I mean the Halloween decorations were in the stores in the beginning of August.  Cookie decorators were posting cookie ideas about the same time.  The houses were decorated the beginning of October and the girls have been counting down the days.

So now it’s finally here and I’ve got to say I’m exhausted.  This year I made both girls costumes. They got to choose and now Abby is Rapunzel and Rowan is Baby Jaguar.  If I say next year I’m making costumes again, remind me about this year and what a nightmare it was.  Now it turned out great and every time I look at the dress for Abby I’m happier with it, but during I think I lost most of my hair.  I’m sure you all heard the distant screaming and wondered what that was…it was me!

costumes

Sorry about the bad pic, I’ll put up better pics once they are all dressed up for tonight.

I also decorated 11 dozen cookies in the Halloween theme.  One dozen went to a co-worker of Rob’s for his daughters and the other 10 dozen were for a fellow Body Pumper.  I’ve never made that many cookies in one shot before and my hand was definitely crampy be the end of the decorating process. I made 13 of each cookie.  I stole so many ideas from fellow cookiers and really enjoyed the experience. Thank you Karen’s Cookies, Sugarbelle, and Lilaloa for your awesome inspiration.  But now I’m tired.   I mean I’ve made cakes, no problem, but I’m newish to the cookie game.  I think they turned out pretty good though :)

Once the cookies were done we had four little girls in our house on Sunday to decorate Haunted Gingerbread Houses.  I made the gingerbread from scratch and then promptly ran out of it.  So one side of the house is made out of sugar cookies as I had some in the fridge, thank god! I put the houses together so the girls just had to decorate.  They used candy melts, jelly beans, marshmallows and some of the Halloween Candy I bought to hand out.  I also helped out with a little Wilton spray food colouring for fun accents.  So they may not have turned out as scary, that you could call them haunted, but the girls had a blast. There may have been more candies eaten than put on the houses.  Look at these happy faces.  The decorating was followed up with face paints, but forgot to take pics, sorry!

haunted

Abby and Rowan also carved their own pumpkins.  Well they drew the faces on and then Rob carved them for the girls.

So the girls are ready for the big trick or treat and I’m getting ready to hand out candy.  I’m glad it’s over and now know how much I will have to do for next year!

Don’t forget, if you carved a pumpkin and took a picture, just send it to me to win some great prizes (well I think they are great).  Details can be found here!
